Terrazzo
Worldstone terrazzo floor tiles and slabs are available in a large range of colours and aggregate sizes. We work with a large state of the art Italian manufacturer who is able to produce custom size tile pieces as well as slabs of various thicknesses. The terrazzo range consists of more than 52 colours, and is available in standard tile formats as cut to size tiles and slab. Worldstone carries slab stock of certain colours, however all colours are available in floor tile and slab.
Worldstone can offer total design flexibility so you can nominate your required size and thickness. Worldstone terrazzo is a cement based product with a natural stone aggregate.
Worldstone terrazzo is a versatile, durable and cost effective solution to both residential and commercial applications.
TERRAZZO Installation Guide
Important: All information provided in this document must be read and interpreted in accordance with prevailing industry standards, regulations and codes.
Furthermore, all installations are unique. The features associated with them, and the conditions of use may vary, thereby impacting on the products suitability and compatibility for the intended application. Where there is a conflict between the recommendations of this guide and the specified building code or standard, please contact Worldstone Solutions for support.
The Product
Our terrazzo, referred to as “the product”, has a Portland cement base, mixed with natural stone aggregate and pigment oxides. The combination of these raw materials results in a small variation between batches in shade, aggregate and aggregate distribution.
Worldstone terrazzo is pre-finished and does not require additional polishing or grinding after installation, however this option exists if the client wishes to do so.
Slip Resistance
All Worldstone terrazzo is produced in a standard honed finish. This honed finish achieves a P1 rating according to AS4586-2013. Slip test reports are available.
In order to achieve a higher Slip Rating, after-installation in-situ treatment of the product is required. Companies such as Slipstop and Griptek will offer this service in the Sydney area
Tile Format and Size
For tiles greater in size than 600 x 600mm we recommend 3cm thickness.
For large format tiles (exceeding 600 x 600mm) we recommend square format and stack bond set-out.
Storage
Tiles must be stored in a dry location and do not break open the packaging until the product is required for installation.
Do not store the product in direct sunlight and keep the product dry.
Laying Instructions
All substrates on which the products are installed must be correctly cured, mechanically strong, free from loose parts, grease, oils, fats, waxes or paint. The substrate must be cured and have completed the hygrometric shrinkage period, be stable and free from cracks. The surface should be non-deformable, and not subject to shrinking or structural movements after laying. The substrate must be suitable for supporting all foreseen loads and stresses.
Screed
The cementitious screed must have a suitable mechanical property and a thickness not lower than 40mm.
Control joints must be carried out every 16-20m2 or every 16 liner metres, taking into consideration the geometric shape of the floor plan and the structural joints already present on the substrate. Control joints must be carried out by mechanically cutting the screed straight down for 1/3 of the depth of the screed.
Substrates should not have a moisture content greater than relative humidity of 75%. The presence of rising damp from the substrate may cause problems for the product once laid. Where water vapour or moisture can penetrate the product from below or behind it is necessary to install a suitable moisture shield.
Inspection
The product must be checked for defect in terms of size, thickness, finish, colour, pattern and damage prior to installation as Worldstone declines any responsibility in case of installation of defective product.
Adhesive
For installation of tiles on cementitious screeds and for tiles in size range up to and including 600 x 600 – 20mm, Worldstone recommends a fast-setting adhesive, such as LATICRETE 335Rapid; or LATICRETE 4237 Rapid Latex and LATICRETE 211 Crete filler powder.
For installation of tiles (slabs) larger in size than 600 x 600, WorldStone recommends LATICRETE 101 Rapid Setting Latex gauged with LATICRETE 315 Super Cement Based Adhesive.
We recommend buttering of the entire tile surface and the substrate surface (double spreading) to improve the adhesion between the product and the substrate.
Wait 2-3 days after the tiles installation before grouting of joints.
Do not use cement based adhesives on the following surfaces:
- -Uncured substrates or substrates subject to excessive deformation
- -On metal, PVC, rubber or linoleum, wooden surfaces or painted surfaces
LATICRETE 4237 Rapid and LATICRETE 211 Crete filler powder can be used for laying operations that require adhesive bed thickness’s up to 15mm or where reduced time to traffic is required for tiles up to 600x600mm in size.
LATICRETE 101 Rapid Setting Latex gauged with LATICRETE 315 Super Cement Based Adhesive can be used for laying operations that require adhesive bed thickness’s up to 15mm or where reduced time to traffic is required for tiles over 600x600mm in size.
For all information concerning the product used for the laying of the terrazzo (adhesive, grout, mortar, moisture barrier etc) consult the manufacturers instructions for each product.
Stair Tread and Riser
For the installation of treads and risers to masonry substrates, Worldstone recommends using LATICRETE 101 Rapid Setting Latex gauged with LATICRETE 315 Super Cement Based Adhesive where medium bed adhesive are required.
We recommend buttering of the entire tread surface and the substrate surface (double spreading) to improve the adhesion between the product and the substrate.
For external stairs allow for expansion joints in the screed every 1000mm and allow for a gap between the end of the tread and the wall.
Wait 2-3 days after the product installation before grouting of joints.
Grouting of the surface
Use LATICRETE PERMACOLOR or PERMACOLOR NS where honing is required.
It is important to grout the whole surface of the floor to avoid the formation of stains caused by different absorption of the grout in the micro porosity of the tiles and to avoid framing.
Do not use dark or contrasting grout.
Joint width
Internal: Floors (3mm) and walls 2mm as per Australian Standards
External: Floors (3-5mm) and walls (2-3mm)
The size of the material being laid and the hygrothermal variables (such as the presence of underfloor heating systems) must be considered when deciding the grout joint size and movement joints. Structural joints in the substrate must always be respected. The need to fractionalise the surface expansion joints must be decided also in conjunction with prevailing legislation.
A minimum of 10mm perimeter gap must allowed for the entire perimeter.
Maintenance
Use only cleaning materials that are a neutral PH factor between 7 – 10 when cleaning the product. Avoid all cleaners or soaps containing water soluble, inorganic or crystallising salts or harmful alkali or acids.
Cleaned and seal Terrazzo with LATICRETE STONETECH Sealers and Cleaners as appropriate for the specific installation.
The Product is recommended for use by professionals only
The indications provided above derive from our best experience at this time. However, as work site conditions may vary considerably, we recommend that the user/installer carry out practical tests to ensure that the product is suitable for the application intended and that the user/installer take responsibility for the results of that use.
